SSC Stenographer 2026 Eligibility Criteria
There are important criteria that a candidate must fulfil to be eligible for the SSC Stenographer 2026. The parameters are given below:
Educational Qualification (as on 01/08/2026)
The minimum Educational Qualification required by a candidate is to be at least a 12th pass from a recognised Board or University. He/She must be able to produce the required documents when asked for verification after qualifying for the SSC Stenographer 2026 Exam.
Age Limit (as on 01/08/2026)
SSC Stenographer Grade C: A candidate must lie in the age domain of 18-30 years to be eligible for the SSC Stenographer 2026 Grade C Exam. Candidates born not before 02.08.1996 and not later than 01.08.2008 are eligible to apply
SSC Stenographer Grade D: A candidate must lie in the age domain of 18-27 years to be eligible for the SSC Stenographer 2026 Grade D Exam. Candidates born not before 02.08.1999 and not later than 01.08.2008are eligible to apply

Nationality
A candidate must be either:
(a) a citizen of India, or
(b) a subject of Nepal, or
(c) a subject of Bhutan, or
(d) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (Formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam to permanently settle in India.
Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour the Government of India has issued a certificate of eligibility.
A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary may be admitted to the examination, but the offer of appointment will be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him by the Government of India.

Photograph – The photograph of a candidate must be clicked in front of a white color or light-colored background. The size of the photograph must be more than 4 kb and less than 12 kb in size. The resolution of the photograph must be 100*120 pixels in width and height.
Signature – The signature provided by the candidate must be in black or blue ink on the white sheet. The scanned copy of the signature that needs to be submitted must be in jpg format, and it should be more than 1 kb and less than 12 kb in size. The resolution of the image should be 40*60 pixels in width and height.

SSC Stenographer 2026 Exam Pattern
The SSC Stenographer 2026 examination will be conducted in 2 different levels. The first level is the Grade C and D exam, which comprises MCQs and is conducted online. After this exam has been conducted, an exam to test your skill sets in various domains is conducted by the SSC.
The details of the Computer-Based Examination for SSC Stenographer 2026 Grade C and D are mentioned below:

Important Points:
a) Question paper will be of Objective Type Multiple Choice. Questions will be set in Hindi and English except for Part III.
b) SSC has introduced sectional timings of 30 minutes for Part 1 and 2, 60 minutes for Part 3.
c) There will be a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. Candidates are, therefore, advised to keep this in mind while answering the question.
SSC Stenographer Minimum Qualifying Marks
The minimum percentage of marks for qualifying in the SSC Stenographer Computer-Based Examination will be as follows:
- Unreserved Category: 30%
- OBC/EWS: 25%
- All Other Categories: 20%
Skill Test in Stenography
Candidates who obtain the qualifying marks in the Examination as may be prescribed by the Commission will be called for the Skill Test. The commission may also prescribe qualifying marks in each part of the Examination. The Skill Test will be of a qualifying nature, and the Commission will fix the qualifying standards in the Skill Test for different categories of candidates.
The candidates will have to appear for the Skill Test in Stenography. The candidates will be given one dictation for 10 minutes in English/ Hindi at the speed of 100 words per minute (w.p.m) for the post of Stenographer Grade ‘C’ and 80 w.p.m. for the post of Stenographer Grade ‘D’. The matter will have to be transcribed on a computer. The transcription time is as follows:

Important Points:
- Candidates who opt to take the Stenography Test in Hindi will be required to learn English Stenography and vice versa after their appointment, failing which their probation may not be cleared by the appointing departments. Candidates have to work as English/ Hindi stenographers as per the functional requirement of the User Office, irrespective of the medium of the Skill Test of the candidate during the examination.
- The skill test will be held at the Commission’s Regional/Sub-Regional Offices or at other Centres (s) as may be decided by the Commission.
- Detailed instructions regarding the Skill Test will be sent by the concerned Regional/Sub-Regional Offices of the Commission to the candidates called for the Skill Test.

All the provisionally appointed candidates for Stenographer Grade ‘C’ (Group ‘B’, Non-Gazetted) and Stenographer Grade ‘D’ (Group ‘C’) posts will be paid an attractive monthly salary. Along with basic salary, various allowances (including Dearness Allowance and House Rent Allowance), and deductions (such as Provident Fund and Income Tax) will also be provided.
