India is the third largest producer of fertilisers in the world. India has to rely on other countries for the potassicfertilisers. This has happened due to its own insignificant commercially exploitable reserves of potash. During 2003-04 India imported over 1.7 million tonne of potassicfertilisers for direct application as well as for production of complex fertilisers. As per the forecast of FAO, India’s foodgrain production in the current season will be up atleast 10% to 232 million tonne. The government is trying to secure additional supply of urea by allowing the well-managed factories to produce beyond their re- assessed capacity government has given a number of incentives to the private and cooperative sectors to enhance the productivity with a view to achieving self- reliance. The government is exploring the possibility to support their expansion programmes.
1. Indian farmers prefer green manures to chemical (4)
2. India is self-reliant in urea to a great extent. (1)
3. With every good monsoon the demand for fertilizer increases. (3)
4. The expected foodgrain production will fall short of the record Indian foodgrain production in 2000-01. (3)
5. In India potash is available in plenty fertilizers. (5)
