3.<\/span> When adding \u2018ed\u2019 and \u2018ing\u2019 endings to verbs that end with a single vowel plus a consonant, double the final consonant if the stress falls at the end of the word.<\/span><\/p>\n

eg:<\/span> Admitting, Admitted.<\/span><\/p>\n

4.<\/span> Drop the final \u201cl\u201d from words that end with a double \u201cl\u201d before adding endings which begin with a consonant. (Such as \u2018ment\u2018, \u2018ful\u2018 and \u2018li\u2018).<\/span><\/p>\n

eg:<\/span> will-wilful, skill-skilful.<\/span><\/p>\n

5.<\/span> when there are two vowels in a row, the first one usually has a long sound, and the second is silent. \u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s \u2018lean\u2019, not \u2018laen\u2019; \u2018team\u2019, not \u2018taem\u2019; \u2018coat\u2019, not \u2018caot\u2019 etc.<\/span><\/p>\n
